But I am a huge fan of Sigune (like, really, who isn't?) I just love everything about this picture: Albus in chains, Minerva in charge; I love Minerva as dragon-slayer, sword-wielder, man-tamer; I love the gender-play and the armor-worn-with-a-brooch; I love the way the Minerva's fichu echoes Albus's flowing locks and the daydream swirls; I love the spats and the sporran. Teddy is 25ish and James 18ish, and the age disparity is just enough to heighten James's crush to something of a hero worship, without Teddy really being out of reach. What stands out to me is how well James's desperation is portrayed. You can feel his mouth go dry and neck get sweaty with how badly he wants Teddy. He flails a bit in this fic, trying to figure out just how to get Teddy to see beyond their brother-like bond. It’s pretty adorable at first, and quickly becomes scorching hot. Poetry is the perfect metaphor for Minerva's character, because a poem takes passion and power and controls them through rhyme, meter, and image. Canon Minerva is the same: a woman of powerful feelings who carefully restrains them behind bun and spectacles and a commitment to order. In this story, she knows and loves all the great and not-so-great Romantic and Victorian poets; she feels deeply the consolation of their philosophies, especially in time of war. It's an understated, touching, and revealing fic, and I also love the connection that tree_and_leaf draws between poetry and spell-making. (The title and several quotations come from a once-famous work by Henry Newbolt called " Vitai Lampada," about how future soldiers learn about stoicism and duty by playing cricket.) And they're also bringing their mutual best friend (i.e.: indentured servant) the Grim Reaper himself. Why everyone should read this: The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy was a TV show that aired on the Cartoon Network about how a little boy and girl who challenged Death himself to a game of high-stakes limbo, won, and became the proud owners of The Grim Reaper's soul for all eternity. So, we have Mandy (or, evil incarnate), Billy (he, with an IQ of -5), and Grim (who, for some reason speaks with a Jamaican accent), at the center of this funny, somewhat cracky, and sometimes disturbing show. In this crossover fic Harry pretty much replaces Billy, as he, Mandy, and Grim head off to Hogwarts; where their presence proceeds to freak out pretty much everyone they run into. St Margarets knows Harry and Ginny so well and and writes them realistically. Despite it's steaminess, this is no polished sex-o-rama between two ludicrously skilled teenagers. Set two days before Christmas, Harry and Draco have a chance meeting in a grocery story aisle and fight over, you guessed it, Yorkshire Pudding. Hilarity and heart-break ensue in this delightful, charming, and utterly enchanting fic. This fic is non-magical AU, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. When I read this I just laughed so hard I almost did what Ron did in the story too :) It was a wonderful rare glimpse at the friendship and tom foolery that the Trio got up to in the tent during the Horcrux hunt. It couldn't have all been gloom and doom, they had to cut up a little. I love the Ron and Harry friendship banter here. Yes it is a bit juevenile, but they WERE teenagers, remember? Very typical teenager behavior! And Harry totally notices Ron checking out Hermione.
